What you're getting

Right, so you're looking at a large reptile here—an alligator, to be precise. It's part of the Crocodylia order, which means it's closely related to crocodiles, though people mix them up constantly. They're actually quite different once you know what to look for.

The giveaway with an alligator is its wide, rounded snout and black colour. When its mouth closes, you can see all of its upper teeth. Crocodiles, by contrast, have narrow, pointed snouts, a grey-green colour, and only that fourth tooth on the lower jaw shows when their mouth shuts.
