The Hanoverian is a warmblood breed — that's a cross between light and heavy horses — and it's one of the oldest and most numerous around. You're looking at centuries of history here: back in the 17th century, Spanish, oriental, and Neapolitan stallions were brought into Germany and bred with local mares, possibly carrying some early warhorse bloodlines. That's how the Holsteiner developed.
