What you're getting

Manatees tend to keep themselves to themselves—you'll spot them alone, in pairs, or occasionally in small groups of half a dozen at most. From above the waterline, often all you'll see is their nose and nostrils poking through. They're fully aquatic creatures, but like all marine mammals, they need to come up for air. A manatee at rest can hold its breath for up to 15 minutes, though when it's on the move, it surfaces every three or four minutes.
