Look, unicorns have had quite the glow-up over the centuries. These days you picture a white horse with a spiralled golden or white horn sprouting from its forehead. But back in medieval times, they were altogether weirder — about the size of a donkey or goat, white, with a deer's head, a horse's body, a lion's tail, a goat's beard and cloven hooves. They symbolised purity and faithfulness, and nobody reckoned you could tame one.
