What you're getting
The Texas longhorn's a bit unusual among cattle breeds because it wasn't deliberately bred into existence. Instead, it happened naturally when wild Spanish stock mixed with the free-range cattle settlers brought over. By the time of the Civil War, these half-wild animals were recognized as their own distinct breed, and they became increasingly popular over the following decades.
Then the early 1900s rolled around and everything changed. As ranchers started fencing off their pastureland and the open range disappeared, the Texas longhorn fell out of favor. Other breeds took over, and that was largely that.
